BET Reads

Our aim is simple: that every pupil leaves us not only able to read, but inspired to read - for life.

In the autumn of 2022, Bourne Education Trust launched BET Reads - a vision for reading across all our schools. Our aim - to ensure every pupil leaves us not just able to read but inspired to read for life.

BET Reads is built on shared principles - evidence-based, collaborative and tailored to the unique context of each school. We believe that reading should never be a lottery. Every pupil deserves high-quality provision, regardless of where they learn.

We continue to be focused on deepening our interventions, further embedding work on disciplinary reading, and exploring digital technology to enhance reading outcomes for every pupil.

Our goals

  • A Trust-wide, embedded reading approach with long-term impact. Our reading curriculums are steeped in the development of fluency and the use of high-quality vocabulary. All BET schools strive to ensure all their pupils are surrounded by and exposed to quality texts and reading experiences which reflect creativity, variety, and diversity, with the aim of inspiring reading at every stage. Nothing is more important to our schools than developing a love of reading and we pride ourselves on sharing and embedding this belief at every stage of education.

  • Screening, diagnosing, and intervening to support every learner. From our phonics programmes in EYFS and KS1 through to our NGRT screening programme when students enter Year 7, our schools are focused on timely, accurate assessments to identify and target interventions which remove the gap and ensure that reading is not a barrier to learning.

  • Empowering expert practitioners to champion reading. We are proud to have a reading champion leading reading in every one of schools; highly experienced, skilled and passionate school leaders dedicated to improving the quality of reading provision, driving up standards whilst promoting reading for pleasure.

  • Continued high-quality CPD for all staff. Professional development is thriving with our annual BET Reading Conference providing an opportunity for collaboration and exploration of best practice and the latest thinking. Dialogue around disciplinary reading sits at the centre of our recent CDP work; with a shared belief the teaching of reading is a collective responsibility. Our schools also recognise the value of CPD collaborations from outside the trust and we are delighted that our schools partner with The Literacy Trust, the Open University Reading for Pleasure – Reading Schools Programme and the Thinking Reading programme at KS3 and 4.
