Our mission

Bourne Education Trust (BET) exists to transform schools and change lives. This is at the heart of everything we do and shapes the choices we make, the way we work and how we support one another. It is a shared mission that motivates and drives our colleagues, governors and trustees. BET is a collective endeavour - more than a connected group of schools. We are all BET, and we are all here for all BET pupils.

Our strategy - ARC

We want to prepare our pupils, colleagues, families and wider communities to succeed in a world that is rapidly changing. Achieving this requires new ways of thinking, leading, learning and working. Transforming schools means reducing the lottery of life chances, disrupting cycles of disadvantage and preparing young people for increasingly complex futures. It is about laying the foundations for a lifelong love of learning. This is how we will change lives.

Our five-year strategy, ARC brings together our three pillars:

  • Ambition - what our children experience and achieve
  • Resilience - how BET sustains that ambition, and,
  • Contribution - how BET’s strength creates wider benefit

Each pillar has one flagship initiative which together will enable our mission.

Pillar one - Ambition

How will this transform schools and change lives?

Ambition defines what children experience and achieve in BET schools. It sets out the high standards the Trust holds itself to on behalf of pupils, families and communities, regardless of context, location or phase. This includes a clear commitment to disrupting disadvantage through strong and sustained pupil progress. As BET grows and the external environment becomes more demanding, Ambition ensures strong practice is consistent and secure across every school.

What is the flagship initiative?

Fully embedding BET Connects as the catalyst to adapt teaching and enrich learning experiences through thoughtful use of technology and data, enabling greater personalisation, sharper intervention and wider access, without compromising relationships or wellbeing.

Pillar two - Resilience

How will this transform schools and change lives?

Resilience describes how BET sustains its ambition over time and remains prepared for the challenges facing the sector and wider society. It focuses on the systems, structures and capacity that enable schools to consistently deliver strong outcomes, regardless of context or circumstance. For BET, Resilience is not about resisting change, but building operational strength, planning responsibly and ensuring schools are fully supported to focus on teaching and learning.

Resilience depends first and foremost on people. Strong outcomes require skilled professionals, high-quality support, solid infrastructure and clear ways of working that enable schools to focus on relationships, teaching
and impact. This requires sustained investment in leadership development, professional learning and organisational capacity, so excellence is embedded across the Trust rather than dependent on individual effort or short-term solutions.

What is the flagship initiative?

Establishing the Bourne Institute of Leadership and Training to create a Trust-wide approach to professional learning, strengthening expertise, developing current and future leaders and sustaining a skilled, stable workforce across BET at every level. Our new partnership with the National Institute of Teaching will be key in delivering this.

Pillar three - Contribution

How will this transform schools and change lives?

Contribution describes how BET uses its strength, internal data and research, scale and expertise to influence and be influenced. As the Trust grows in both size and reach, its responsibility extends beyond its own schools to the wider education system and the communities it serves.

Contribution is about ensuring that BET plays a constructive and influential role in local communities, regionally and nationally, for example through forums such as RISE, policy round tables, working parties, collaboration with other MATs and work with the independent schools and health sectors.

What is the flagship initiative?

Positioning Dragonfly, our trading subsidiary, as a vehicle through which BET shares its expertise, services and innovation with the wider education sector, strengthening the Trust’s influence through new partnerships while generating sustainable income that supports long-term investment and impact in our schools.
